Individual Therapy

The Human Givens Approach starts out with finding out about you and the difficulties you are experiencing. More often than not, right from the first session we will also begin using relaxation methods, together with a wide range of other techniques. These exercises work to activate your own natural resources and are key to providing you with immediate relief from psychological stress.

We will also work out some achievable and realistic goals to focus on, starting with small manageable steps and continuing at a pace which suits you. We will work together to set goals that are clear and meaningful to you.

From here we can activate your natural resources to help you to feel better and take back control of your life.

At each session we check out what effects the treatment is having on you and, if necessary, work through any unanticipated difficulties.

Treatment ends when you are happy that you have made enough progress to continue living a healthy life without regular assistance from me.

(Human Givens Therapists do not encourage people to become dependent on therapy.)

How long will it take?

Everyone’s situation is different, but we aim to take as few sessions as possible and you can fully expect improvements to begin from the first session. The average number of sessions is between four and six sessions.

Depression

The key to how depression starts is worry: When one or more innate emotional needs is not being met in a person’s life, for whatever reason, they start to worry about it instead of doing something to correct the situation. The worrying over stimulates the autonomic nervous system resulting in excessive dream sleep and less recuperative, refreshing sleep. This sleep imbalance means they get into a cycle of continually worrying, poor sleep and waking up tired and lacking the normal motivation to get on with life. This miserable feeling gives them yet another thing to worry about and the cycle continues.

So, if you feel miserable and bad about yourself much of the time, are increasingly preoccupied with negative ideas about your life and the world, don’t feel motivated to do the things you used to enjoy or were good at, sleep poorly and often wake up exhausted and find everything an effort you are almost certainly depressed.

Does this sound like you?

Maybe you can’t keep your mind on what you are doing, can’t bring yourself to listen to others or bother talking to someone. Maybe you can’t sleep or wake up too early because of the worries buzzing around in your head, or maybe you are sleeping day, a thick and unrefreshing sleep that is simply a way of avoiding being awake and tackling problems. This, of course, leaves you more exhausted. Maybe you can’t eat, or maybe you can’t stop eating. Perhaps you are too unmotivated even to contemplate the simplest task so opening a can of beans or walking to the fridge is an action too huge to contemplate and may reduce you to tears.

If you are depressed or have been depressed in the past, some of all of these experiences will strike a chord with you. When you get that low, you may feel you are in the grip of a terrible unfathomable illness that you are powerless to fight against. Even if you have experienced and overcome depression in the past, you may still feel unable to prevent it swallowing you again; to you it is a demon, a life sentence, and an unavoidable curse.

In fact, with the right knowledge, it isn’t. The monstrous, life destroying experience of depression can be totally outwitted, banished and annihilated – BY YOU.

Anxiety & Stress

Anxiety affects us all at times in our lives, and for some people it can be an extremely disabling condition. It can take the form of generalised anxiety, panic attacks, fears, phobias, lack of confidence or overwhelming stress and pressure. Trauma & Phobias

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a particularly disturbing and disabling illness which can be caused by exposure to any event which is either (or perceived to be) life threatening. The symptoms typically include the following:

Human Givens therapists can treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder effectively and quickly. We can relieve or remove symptoms such as flashbacks, interrupted sleep, anxiety and panic in most cases.

Sleep & Dreaming

Dreaming is Nature’s solution to the problems emotions (expectations) cause animals and humans. Stress, for example, is caused by an accumulation of arousal patterns in the autonomic nervous system that are not being dearoused by taking the necessary actions that would do so.

The prime function of dreams is to metaphorically act out undischarged emotional arousals (expectations) that were not acted out during the previous day. By dreaming we complete the arousal/dearousal circuit so as to wake up with an unstressed autonomic nervous system and our instincts intact.

If we have happy positive expectations we have happy dreams, but, when this system is overstretched and the dreaming process cannot cope with the amount of negative expectations (as when people continually worry), sleep balance is disturbed, dreams are miserable, even nightmarish, and depression can set in. An extreme stress overload can interfere with the process to such an extent that psychotic symptoms arise.

Self Esteem

Healthy self-esteem is important to our psychological health. It shows that our focus is directed outward, away from the self making us less emotional, usually, and more effective in our personal and professional lives.

In contrast, excessive high self-esteem or low self-esteem displays an inward focus, which is fuelled by strong positive or negative emotions.

So, to promote a more healthy self esteem The Human Givens Approach works on helping individuals get their needs met in balance so that self esteem problems, both low and high, are no longer an issue.

Relationships

Relationship difficulties are often self-perpetuating because our beliefs and reactions to each other trigger patterns of behaviour which stop us solving them. Often this is perpetuated by a lack of knowledge about the differences between individuals and their ways of relating and coping under stress. Men and women often behave differently and have different coping mechanisms, which can be confusing.
